With the news breaking of George Abbot’s return to his parent club, Tottenham Hotspur and Ewan Henderson’s injury keeping him on the side-lines for four to six weeks, along with Josh Scowen’s continued absence since the closing stages of last campaign, the social media chatter as of recently has been around strengthening their ranks in the middle of the pitch and adding some much-needed depth to the squad, especially at a time where injuries are becoming a reoccurring thing for Wycombe Wanderers.

According to Richard Cawley who provided Charlton Athletic coverage on Substack, Wycombe are interested in signing midfielder Karoy Anderson on a loan deal for the rest of the season.

The 21-year-old has struggled for minutes so far this campaign for the Championship side, only starting a total of four and has been completely left out in Charlton’s last three, with the London-based team currently struggling, sat at 19th and only five points safe from the drop.

Wycombe have recently registered their interest in the player, and would be looking to take him on a loan deal for the rest of the season. The midfielder, of course, has experience in the League, featuring in a total of 38 matches in the third tier with Charlton last season, and was called up in November on international duty for Jamaica.

He played for a total of 25 minutes across two legs in the playoff semi-finals against Wycombe last season, and earlier during the campaign, he scored in Charlton’s 4-0 thrashing against Wycombe in April.

In terms of stats, the midfielder had a pass success rate of 77% last season, and has a dribble success rate of above 40%. However, he only has an accurate long ball rate of 22% and has only won around 40% of his duels. There is definitely promise in the player, at only 21, he still has a long career ahead of him and a loan back to League One for the rest of the season won’t do any harm.

When he has been used for Charlton this season, it’s more often than not within a 3-5-2 formation, with Connor Coventry in the DM position and Anderson in front. But last season in League One, he was used as a DM in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Whilst he didn’t register an assist last season, his dribble success rate of 42% and a total of 38 touches in the opposition’s box could mean he’s the type of player to bring the ball higher up the pitch, rather than just hoofing the ball wide to the wingers. He could start alongside either Luke Leahy or Caolan Boyd-Munce, with Michael Duff also opting for a formation with two defensive-midfielders.

It has been seen before at Wycombe with the loan signing of Cameron Humphreys from Ipswich last season after he was struggling for game time since their promotion, as well as Sonny Bradley, Xavier Simons and Caleb Taylor, who also joined on loan from Championship teams after not getting too many minutes and were great for Wanderers.

However, with rumours circulating around other players that may or may not be added to Wycombe’s midfield this season, will the player get a look into the squad? Depth is never bad on paper, especially with the amount of injuries Wanderers have picked up already. But it entirely depends on what else, or who else, Wycombe intend on bringing in this Winter.

A player with two previous seasons of experience with a side that went on to win the play-offs last season, could turn out to be a great addition to the side.
