Pete O’Rourke today has revealed that Wycombe Wanderers right-back Fin Back is close to joining Colchester United on a loan until the end of the 20525/26 season.

Fin joined the Chairboys in the winter window of the 2024/2025 season, joining on a permanent transfer from Nottingham Forest to strengthen the squad ahead of a fight for promotion under Mike Dodds, but would get little gametime, making just two appearances in the league as Wycombe fell to Charlton in the playoff semi-finals.

While some may have hoped he would garner more gametime this season, he has played just 11 times so far for Wycombe, six of those appearances coming in cup competitions, with the 23-year-old behind captain Jack Grimmer and Sunderland loanee Niall Huggins in the squad.

Jack Grimmer’s presence on the pitch has been highlighted by manager Michael Duff as extremely important, while Niall Huggins has been preferred as a backup and off the bench due to his attacking ability, as well as his ability to play as a winger.

As such, a short term loan spell to Colchester United could make a great deal of sense for all parties. Wycombe ensure one of their younger players continue to get game time and develop, while Colchester get another strong defender in the building.

The Cowley brothers have Colchester in a possible promotion playoff battle, sat four places off Swindon in seventh but have struggled with injuries at the back. A move for Back would allow former Chairboy Kane Vincent-Young to be deployed at left back, giving the U’s plenty of attacking impetus from the fullbacks.

It would also help Wycombe deal with it’s large squad size, allowing for a tighter knit group who hope to fight for promotion under Duff.
