There are four Wycombe Wanderers players out of contract this summer.
Unlike the years under Gareth Ainworth, where summers could result in massive upheaval and the waited anticipation of potentially seeing fan favourites leave, under Michael Duff and the eye of Tom Stockwell, Wanderers now have a level of stability going into the season’s end.
There are also four players leaving at the end of their loan contracts, which we will also talk about here, considering they too will be leaving the Chairboys, albeit at the end of a temporary affiliation in the quarters.
The Loanees: Niall Huggins, Cauley Woodrow, Nathan Lowe and Luke Harris
Three attackers and one defender will leave the building in the summer to return to their parent clubs.
Niall Huggins joined the club on deadline day to play as a backup to captain Jack Grimmer at right back, following Sunderland’s promotion to the Premier League and his own battles against a long-term injury.
The 25-year-old has made 18 appearances in the league thus far as a backup to Grimmer, and whilst he was strong going forward, he was not as comfortable in his defensive duties, likely feeling more comfortable as a wingback with a more offensive role in a back-five system.
Wycombe currently have fellow right-back Fin Back contracted to the club in the position, so they don’t appear desperately short of players in the position.
Perhaps a case of a good player in the wrong system, though Mike Dodds did seem to favour a five-back shortly before being sacked.
Luke Harris joined in the January window, supplanting Wycombe’s own Jamie Mullins to play as a 10, but also on the wing.
An athletic and determined runner in a team that Duff has stated has too many players who want to play the passes but not receive them.
Somewhat underrated in this role, but also regularly starting during Wycombe’s inconsistent form, he’s netted two goals and got two assists in 18 league games.
A solid if unspectacular player, another versatile attacker may be needed when he leaves to return to Fulham.
Nathan Lowe joined in January, recovering from an injury sustained while on loan at Stockport County, and has only managed 12 appearances for the Chairboys so far, but has managed a goal or assist every other game in the quarters, netting four times and getting two assists in the League.
Fast, strong and with a knack for getting into good areas, it’s largely a shame he wasn’t able to make more of an impact over a larger space of time.
He joined another loanee striker, Cauley Woodrow, who also joined the Chairboys on deadline day from fellow League One side Luton Town.
Initially struggling to net, he hit a run of form in the latter half of the season to become Wycombe’s second-highest scorer with eight goals and four assists in the league.
Experienced and strong at bringing in other players to the game, combined with Lowe’s loss, means that Wycombe will be light up front, with only the lone Bradley Fink contracted to the club.
It does seem probable that the club will seek at least one, if not two strikers, this summer if Duff continues to deny Fink the chance to play.
They join four Wycombe contracted players who, at present, will be leaving the club following the expiration of their contracts.
Permanent players out of contract this summer
Controversial goalkeeper Will Norris could be leaving the club soon.
Fans have not taken to the experienced shot stopper, and my personal frustrations with Norris aren’t that he isn’t a good goalkeeper.
On his day, Norris has proven he can be an exceptional shot stopper with the confidence to command the box and the ability to shut down opposition defences.
It’s a shame we’ve continued to rarely see this impervious Norris, instead getting one who’s struggled with inconsistency.
Wycombe do have young keeper Mikki Van Sas contracted, and the popular Stuart Moore as a backup, leaving the Wycombe hierarchy with a question on whether to extend Norris’s contract, twist and give Mikki another shot in goals, or search for a new one altogether.
Shamal George, too, is out of contract after excelling on loan at St Mirren, but has never looked like a contender for the throne to take the Wycombe number one shirt.
The former Liverpool keeper would likely be served best by going back north of the border, where his reputation is much higher following his heroics to help the club win the Scottish League Cup over goliath Celtic.
On the complete opposite end of popularity is four-time Wycombe player Fred Onyedinma, who, too, could leave the building during the summer.
He’s done it once before, leaving Wanderers following their relegation from the Championship to join Luton Town, and at 29, this could be his last major contract he will be capable of negotiating.
While he undoubtedly feels comfortable and loved at Wycombe, and the Chairboys will be desperate to get him off the back of his best ever season in football, money talks, and doubtless he could be tempted by one last move back to the Championship.
He could be joined by fellow winger Andre Vidigal, who joined Wycombe on a short-term contract in February.
The winger has looked sharp when he’s played, but when is the key term there.
Duff spoke about discipline issues that led to his full debut for Wycombe coming later than may have been anticipated, making his first start in April.
But, in 12 games, he has netted twice and has consistently looked to take on his man, run at defenders and arrive late in the box for crosses.
There is always the chance he sees his future somewhere higher, leaving Wycombe with a dearth of options on the wings, with only Junior Quitirna and the currently loaned out James Berry at Chesterfield as wing options.
