Wycombe Wanderers in transfer tussle with Celtic for highly-rated Motherwell goalkeeper

Christopher Reidy reported that the Chairboys are interested in highly rated Motherwell goalkeeper Calum Ward, who is also being chased by Scottish giants Celtic and Polish club Jagiellonia Bialystok.

The 25-year-old joined the Scottish side last summer from AC Oulu of the Finnish First Division; before then he had been at HIFK, also of Norway, and had a loan spell at Weymouth when he was on Bournemouth’s books.

Ward has excelled up in Scotland, keeping 17 clean sheets in 29 games for Motherwell as they fight for the last European space in fourth place.

The goalkeeper is incredibly strong at his shot-stopping. He is top of the table for clean sheets kept; has the highest save percentage in the league at 75.8% (Will Norris manages 63.1%); has kept out 8.8 more goals than would have been expected (Norris has conceded 1.99 more goals than expected); and concedes just 0.9 goals per game (compared to Norris’ 1.15 per game).

He is also a stronger player with his feet; he makes 40.2 successful passes a match at an 82.3% rate (Norris makes 24.58 passes per match at a 60.8% success rate) and manages 6.55 long balls per 90 at a 46.8% success rate.

Again, Norris lags behind with more long passes attempted at 7.58 per match but with a much lower success rate of 32.8%.

All in all, the statistics show that Ward looks to be a much stronger goalkeeper than Norris.

Wycombe, however, would face a stiff challenge from two European clubs: Scottish giants Celtic and Polish club Jagiellonia Bialystok.

Both would be able to offer larger wages and European football, so while it may be a tricky deal to agree to, it would be a major statement of intent for the Wycombe project that is ongoing.

Scotland has also been a productive area of recruitment for the new regime; Caolan Boyd-Munce joined from St Mirren, and Dan Casey joined from Motherwell too, so Scottish recruits could be another sensible avenue of transfer policy.

At 25 too, Ward would have possible resale value if he continues to excel and improve.

Interestingly, his brother also played for Wycombe. Calum Ward’s brother, Christie Ward, was signed as a member of Wycombe’s development team system and was at the club from 2022 to 2025, a strange link but one that could help the club attempt to sign him.

The Quartermen wrote that the club would have a decision on their hands with Will Norris out of contract, and it seems they may have chosen to twist and look for a new goalkeeper in the summer window.
