Magnus Westergaard departs: Why didn’t he work at Wycombe Wanderers?

Where did it all go wrong for Magnus Westergaard at Wycombe Wanderers?

It has been announced that Wycombe Wanderers’ record signing Magnus Westergaard has departed Adams Park only a year after he joined the Chairboys for a fee of around £800k.

Since joining however, his chances have been few and far between, only managing to start a total of four times this season in League One and has made 18 appearances in all competitions, scoring in the Carabao Cup tie against Bromley and registering an assist against Fulham’s U21’s.

His signing was announced only two days after Matt Bloomfield departed Wycombe for the vacant managerial role at Luton Town, with Sam Grace taking charge on an interim basis during his first few games before Mike Dodds was appointed Wycombe’s new head coach.

Under the former Sunderland coach, he continued to struggle for game time, more often used as a late substitution in League matches to close out a game, or a starter in the rotated side that we saw during Cup fixtures.

Dodds was prone to chopping and changing his lineups, with fans uncertain as to whether he knew his strongest side while at Wycombe. Formation changes were seen a lot too, Dodds using five, four or 3 at the back during his time in Buckinghamshire, with Westergaard rarely starting. When he did start, he was used more centrally, whether that be as an attacking or defensive midfielder.

Following Dodds’ departure and the appointment of Michael Duff, the 27-year-old has continued to struggle to get a look into the starting XI when it comes to League matches, and continued to be called upon during cup matches or as a late substitute.

His last start for Wycombe was against Luton away on Boxing Day, in which Wanderers crumbled and conceded four and scored none. While the overall performance that day left a lot to be desired, questions were asked of him after the match, and he has been absent since.

Fitness had been an ongoing issue during his time here too, unable to get fully fit and get a good run of games in.
