Wycombe Wanderers in 5-club race for prolific non-league striker

Wycombe Wanderers have joined the race for York City striker Josh Stones, according to the latest reports from journalist Alan Nixon via his Patreon page on Sunday morning.

Nixon has reported that the Chairboys and League One rivals Luton Town are the two latest sides to join the race for the highly sought-after forward, sending scouts to watch him recently.

It’s unclear what game Wycombe watched Stones in, but it could’ve been Saturday’s 0-1 victory over Morecambe, where Stones failed to score, but his side collected all three points thanks to an Ollie Banks winner in the 99th minute.

According to the report, Reading, Oxford United and Stockport County all had representatives present at the Mazuma Stadium on Saturday to check out the 22-year-old, who has netted 13 goals in 32 National League outings so far this term.

Stones has made just nine EFL appearances so far in his career, all of which came at previous club Wigan Athletic, but he was unable to find the net for the Latics in a league match, with all of his goals coming in the EFL Trophy.

Nixon suggested in his report that a lot will hinge on whether Stones helps fire York to promotion. The Minstermen sit top of the National League after Saturday’s triumph at Morecambe, but have Rochdale just a point behind with a game in hand.

We know Wycombe will be looking for a new man to lead the line this summer, with Nathan Lowe and Cauley Woodrow set to return to their parent clubs, whilst the future of Bradley Fink remains up in the air.

However, they will face stiff competition from several divisional rivals, who are all monitoring the situation closely.
