What could Kayden Jackson bring to Wycombe Wanderers?

Alan Nixon has revealed that Wycombe Wanderers are in for Derby County attacker Kayden Jackson. Wycombe have been on the hunt for an attacker following the loan recall of Sam Bell, and 31-year-old Kayden Jackson could well be a sensible short term option as a versatile attacker who can play across the front line.

Jackson, who can play at both wings but most prominently as a nine, has struggled for game time this season with Derby County following their successful bid to stay in the Championship last season. His 2570 minutes of League football last season has fell sharply to just 367 minutes so far this season as he has fell largely to being a bench option for John Eustace, frequently getting 10 minutes or less from the bench at the back end of games.

While looking at Jackson’s goalscoring record you may be a little concerned given his infrequent scoring in the Championship, he has managed better in League One, getting 18 goals across four seasons with Ipswich Town.

His underlying stats however do show some promise, in last season he managed 1.47 shots per 90, 37.8% of his dribbles successfully and 3.54 touches in the opposition box per 90 (which suggests he gets into good areas in the final third). This is complimented by his last full season in League One where he was actually strong creatively, managing 0.13 expected assists per 90, 1.09 chances created per 90 and 55.6% of his dribbles made successfully.

While some may be unimpressed by his goalscoring record, Wycombe fans ought to remember the last players who’ve joined us from the Championship in need of confidence and gametime. Sonny Bradley joined from Derby County last season to much mockery from Derby fans yet was an exceptional defender for the Chairboys, while Sam Vokes netted 17 league goals in his first season after struggling at Stoke City for three seasons. Jackson may well adopt similarly to a lower level, gaining the confidence to show his ability that he does have, but hasn’t shown as much as he should.

His pace and versatility will also offer a useful option for Duff up front, in contrast to Cauley Woodrow who tends to do best dropping deep to link play, and Bradley Fink who has struggled to garner gametime so far as he adapts to life in England.

While it is not the inspiring signing Wycombe fans have crying out for, he is a sensible one who in the short term could add some quality to a team in need of different options, and could prove to be a shrewd signing if he takes well to a lower level.
