A short roundup of all the Wycombe Wanderers transfer news and gossip in the first few days of the January transfer window.

Wycombe Wanderers transfer roundup – Shamal George recall stance revealed and Harry Cornick move on the cards

The first few days of the transfer window have been eventful for Wycombe Wanderers. The news of Sam Bell’s departure on New Year’s Day came as a real disappointment ahead of the match against league leaders Cardiff City.

It wasn’t widely expected that the 23-year-old would be recalled right away, but Bristol City were clearly keen to get him back after his successful spell at Adams Park, so Gerhard Struber can assess him before making a decision on his future.

Bell made an instant impact, coming off the bench in a 5-0 victory over Portsmouth and setting up his side’s fourth goal of the afternoon. The winger is out of contract at Ashton Gate in the summer, and will be looking to impress his boss in the hopes of winning an extension.

It remains unclear at this stage whether Wycombe will pursue a permanent deal for Bell, but they are the only other club who he can play for this season, having already made appearances for the Chairboys and the Robins.

A lot of the chatter on social media after Bell’s recall was that his Bristol City colleague, Harry Cornick, would be coming to Adams Park instead. This seemed rather unrealistic, given that the 30-year-old has only made four league appearances in the last 18 months.

However, since the initial rumour spread, sources have revealed to The Quartermen that Wycombe making a move for Cornick is still very much on the cards. The Chairboys are searching for a quick replacement for the departed Bell, and have seemingly landed on his Robins teammate as a viable target.

Elsewhere, head coach Michael Duff revealed post-Cardiff that he will be looking for ‘at least three’ new faces this transfer window. The 47-year-old is keen to add bodies to his squad after Magnus Westergaard, Ewan Henderson, and George Abbott have all suffered injuries which will keep them sidelined for weeks.

Speaking to Wanderers reporter James Richings, Duff said: With the outgoings, I don’t know, but we need to bring probably at least three in.

“When you look at the squad, we need to see what is needed within it.

“In certain areas, we’re stacked with good quality and competition, but in other areas, we’re really light.”

Finally, it’s been confirmed that Wycombe hold the option to recall goalkeeper Shamal George from his loan spell with St Mirren, but the Buddies have had some assurances that the Chairboys won’t be taking that option, according to St Mirren reporter David Irvine.

With a busy week likely in store for Chairboys supporters, we will hopefully have some confirmed deals to discuss next week. Also remember to keep an eye out on The Quartermen for exclusive news and opinion pieces this transfer window.
