5 options Wycombe Wanderers must look at in January to solve their striking struggles.

5 Strikers Wycombe Wanderers must look to sign in the January transfer window

Just 12% of Wycombe Wanderers fans polled were happy with Wycombe’s striking options so far this season. With just two goals and three assists in a combined 1499 minutes, Bradley Fink, Cauley Woodrow and Donnell McNeilly average a goal or assist every 299.8 minutes of football. Just not good enough.

Combined with the fact both Woodrow and McNeilly are loanees, it becomes apparent Wycombe desperately need to look at long term options at the striker position. Here are five such suggestions.

Option One: Owen Elding, 19 Years Old, Sligo Rovers

One of the most productive players in the entire Irish Premier Division, teenager Owen Elding scored 12 goals and got four assists in his second season with Sligo Rovers who limped to a 7th place finish just ahead of the relegation zone.

Supremely versatile, Elding can play across the attack on both wings, as a ten but particularly as a striker in Sligo’s 4-2-3-1 formation.

Elding excels at essentially all major parts of the attack, with his only (relative) weaknesses in progressive runs and offensive duels (at 49th and 54th percentile) are still both reasonably strong, especially at a tender age of 19. He would be capable as playing as both a line leading nine, but also as a deeper player as a ten or a false nine.

Now would also be the ideal time to strike on attempting to sign the attacker given that Ireland’s main transfer window is actually in January, as the league runs from February to November.

Moving now would allow Sligo Rovers time to replace him during their pre-season and not in the middle of their season, but would also entail needing to bring Elding up to speed which could be a lengthy process similar to the ones needed for Anders Hagelskjær and Magnus Westergaard.

Option Two: Sam Smith, 27 Years Old, Wrexham

He’ll probably be one of the most sought out strikers in the EFL for League One clubs seeking some firepower up front, and for good reason. Wrexham have spent incredible amounts in money on plenty of players, including forwards Kieffer Moore and Sam Smith. This has heavily impacted Smith’s gametime, and still in the peak of his powers, he won’t want to sit on the bench for much longer.

Whilst this season he has played just 259 minutes across 17 matches, last season is much more representative of his ability, scoring 18 goals and getting two assists in 43 league matches with both Reading and Wrexham in League One.

Averaging 0.44 goals per game, 2.32 shots and 43.1% of his duels per match, Smith ranks well as a line leading striker. He could easily slot in as a league one experienced striker with goals in his arsenal.

Option Three: Alassana Jatta, 26 Years Old, Notts County

Alassana Jatta will need no introduction as a goalscorer. Following a move from Viborg in Denmark, Jatta has consistently been one of League Two’s top threats, scoring 35 goals across 70 league games.

Jatta is an interesting player, he’s not a high volume shooter, but instead is clinical with the shots he does take. He manages just 2.07 shots per game but scores 0.61 goals per game. For context, Woodrow takes 2.56 shots per game but scores just 0.17 goals per game (an underperformance on his expected goals per game of 0.39).

Notts County, however, are incredibly unlikely to want to give up their second highest goalscorer in the middle of a promotion battle, similar to Wycombe just a year ago when Luton Town came in for Richard Kone.

Option Four: Emre Tezgel, 20 years old, Crewe Alexandra (On loan from Stoke City)

It’s a surprise it’s taken the prolific youth striker this long to get a loan, but now he’s got it, he hasn’t let it slip.

Tezgel has taken to senior football quickly and efficiently, scoring seven goals and getting one assist in 20 league games with promotion fighters Crewe Alexander.

While similar to Jatta in that Crewe would be incredibly reluctant to lose him, the decision would ultimately lie with his parent club and what they believe best for his future. We saw similar happen last season, with Stockport County’s Louie Barry recalled by Aston Villa and sent back out the level above to Championship side Hull City.

Tezgel is in many aspects a pure poacher. While not poor at passing by any means, he excels in the penalty area. If he gets a chance in a good area, he will likely finish it.

This would raise concerns if he joined Wycombe, Sam Bell and Fred Onyedinma often look to fashion chances to score themselves. However, if Wycombe are looking at a young, in form, clinical striker to lead the line as a nine, Tezgel would make a very good option.

Option Five: Victor Edvarsen, 29 years old, Go Ahead Eagles

One thing I haven’t considered is that Duff genuinely wants to play with a false nine. With all the other recommendations being more pure goal scorers, I endeavoured to find a more ball playing striker.

After scouting many leagues and players I found 29 year old Victor Edvarsen of Go Ahead Eagles in the Eridivisie.

Typically playing as a striker or attacking midfielder in a 4-2-3-1, Edvarsen excels not at goalscoring but at creating chances, scoring nine goals and getting six assists for Go Ahead Eagles in their last league season.

Edvarsen excels as a creative striker, ranking extraordinarily highly in nearly every aspect aside from shots. But, if he’s playing as a false 9, that doesn’t actually matter as much, as it’s more about his ability to bring in players like Bell or Onyedinma to score themselves.
