Potential Wycombe Wanderers transfer target: Sam Smith

The veteran striker has been struggling for game time at Championship side, Wrexham, and could be on the radar of Wycombe Wanderers in the January transfer window.

Potential Wycombe Wanderers transfer target: Sam Smith

With Wycombe Wanderers in the midst of a bit of a goal drought as of recently, with Bradley Fink and Cauley Woodrow not providing too much when it comes to putting the ball in the back of the net, there’s no better time than when the January Transfer Window opens to bring in an experienced, consistent goal scorer who is familiar with the league.

Sam Smith, League One’s joint third-highest goal-scorer last year, tied with Richard Kone and two others with 18 scored, could be exactly what Michael Duff and Wycombe need going into the New Year. A grand total of zero scored in the last four, Wanderers are in desperate need of someone who can consistently find the back of the net, and who overall is strong going forward, and Smith fits those standards perfectly.

Ever since Wrexham’s second-placed finish last season and their promotion to the Championship, Smith has lacked game time for the Welsh side, only playing a total of 259 minutes so far this season and has more recently been used as a late substitute, failing to play any more than 15 minutes in Wrexham’s last five and only starting once. Playing in a total of 43 last season, it could be a very unwelcome change for the striker.

Which is exactly why he could be a potential target for the Chairboys, who are still looking for the player that replaces Richard Kone following his move to Queens Park Rangers in the Summer, with other attackers who were brought in failing to meet the standard required. Smith knows the league well, playing with both Reading and Wrexham last season, and would bring with him valuable experience to the team.

Both Bradley Fink and Cauley Woodrow have struggled to hold the ball up and win their aerial duals if the ball was played high towards them, only having 18.2% and 35.1% respectively. In contrast, last season Sam Smith won 45.4%, meaning Wanderers players would be free to make those long balls and actually have a good chance of keeping it and creating something.
