Potential Wycombe Wanderers transfer target: Sam Bell

Wycombe Wanderers must try and make their loan deal with Bristol City for Sam Bell permanent this winter.

Potential Wycombe Wanderers transfer target: Sam Bell

Sam Bell is already a Wycombe Wanderers player, technically, on loan from Bristol City. The major downside of him is that we don’t control his future, with Bristol City capable of recalling the 23-year-old in January if they desired, and he would doubtless return to the club in the summer regardless.

So what if Wycombe instead negotiated a permanent move for the winger? Bell is currently Wycombe’s top scorer with six goals in the League and two assist in 15 games, making a contribution pretty much every other game.

Sam Bell has been quietly one of the best left wingers in the League, failing to gain the same recognition as others due to Wycombe’s position in the table.

He marks extremely highly for goals, touches in the opposition box, accelerations and progressive runs, capable of getting behind opposition lines, driving at defenders, and arriving at the back post to score.

His 0.47 goals per 90, 1.03 shots on target per 90 and 4.65 touches in the opposition area per 90 all track very highly compared to other wingers in the division, but by comparison is weaker at his passing and dribbling, which are typically in the bottom 40-50% of players in the same position. This has been one of the few issues with Bell, with the winger sometimes failing to find passes other players would find, or taking shots when a pass would have been the better choice.

However at 23, these traits can still be trained and improved while keeping his excellent goalscoring ability as a key part of his game.

He’s also unlikely to play for Bristol City over former Chairboy Anis Mehmeti who’s in superb form so far in the Championship with six goals and six assists for the Robins, and Neto Borges a capable backup for rotation and on the bench.

A deal in the winter would not just suit Wycombe, allowing the club to retain the future of one of it’s standout stars so far, but for Bristol City to get a fee for a player who’ll be out of contract in the summer of 2026.
