Fast forward to 2025 and nearly 2026, he’s still a midfielder I’ve kept my eye on, and for good reason.
Wycombe still need a deep lying playmaker to replace Aaron Morley. Ewan Henderson has played well in the role injuries may be a concern, Luke Leahy is aging and his long term performance isn’t guaranteed, while Jamie Mullins is technically and mentally gifted but not physically strong enough to play that deeper role just yet.
While Aaron Morley himself would doubtless be a popular signing in the position, we should look at Watt as a genuine option.
Since his spell at Salford City where he made his name, Watt has headed north of the border to Motherwell in the Scottish Premiership where he has continued to excel as a deep lying midfielder.
Watt excels in essentially every area besides key passes (A pass that immediately creates a clear goal scoring opportunity for a teammate), ranking the highest in the entire Scottish Premier for Forward Passes, Progressive Passes and Received Passes.
His two goals and two assists in 23 league games is on par for a player who’s typically deeper in midfield, but it is defensively his weaknesses are highlighted.
While undoubtedly excellent with the ball, he’s solid at interceptions, blocked shots and ball recoveries, he struggles at his duels (50.7% won per game) and tackles won per game (1.73 per game). In order to get the benefit of his strengths of Watt, he would need to be paired with a ball winning midfielder, particularly the returning Josh Scowen who’s tenacity and aggression in defence could make the perfect pairing for Wycombe in the second half of this season.
Watt would be capable of bringing the ball from deep, conducting the game and finding through balls to unlock Fred Onyedinma and Sam Bell on the wings, with on Henderson capable of doing this so far this season from deep.
Elliot Watt would add an undeniable quality in possession to Wycombe, he’s a natural six with genuinely fantastic passing ability. He also matches Wycombe’s transfer policy, with Caolan Boyd-Munce and Dan Casey joining from Scotland in the summer with the latter joining from Motherwell on a free transfer.
It would also raise a question over the number of defensive midfielders at the club. Mullins, Scowen, Leahy, Henderson, Magnus Westergaard, Boyd-Munce and George Abbott are all capable of playing at defensive midfield, another one joining would undoubtedly require another player leaving at least.
He would also require a fee, with Watt signing on an initial two year deal with an extension for a third season in the summer, and given the 25-year-old has declared for Scotland, may see a better opportunity to play for his national team by playing in it’s highest tier.
But regardless, he could doubtless be a fantastic option for the club to finally find it’s strong, passing six it’s cried out for since last January.
