Where are they now? – The 2021/22 Wycombe Wanderers play-off squad

The 21/22 League One campaign was certainly one to be remembered for Chairboys fans: their first season back in the third division of English football after their first and only season (so far) in the Championship.

They certainly didn’t allow the heartbreak of relegation to have a negative effect the following season, however- Immediately fighting to get their place back. It was a valiant effort overall, finishing sixth in the League table, three points above Plymouth Argyle.

Beating MK Dons in the play-off semi-finals with a scoreline of 2-1 on aggregate, Wanderers had made it to Wembley, set to face off against Sunderland and hoping to recreate the triumph of the 19/20 season, this time with fans present.

Even though it never came to be, Wanderers certainly had a season to be proud of. So, where are the players that featured in the final against Sunderland?

David Stockdale
The man who started between the sticks at Wembley, Stockdale was excellent for Wycombe, becoming a starter when Ryan Allsop was injured during the Championship season and going on to become Wanderers’ number one.

He won the Golden Glove for the 21/22 season and left the Chairboys after the playoff campaign had come to an end, joining fellow League One side (at the time) Sheffield Wednesday and was released when they made it back into the Championship.

He then returned to York City as both a player and their Head of Recruitment but only made four appearances and was released in April 2024.

Stockdale also managed Blyth Spartans for 48 days, sacked after the club was sold. In February of this year, Farsley Celtic appointed Stockdale as their fourth manager of the season, with the former shot-stopper buying the club in June.

Joe Jacobson
Joining Wycombe in 2014, Jacobson had already seen Wembley triumph, scoring the winning goal against Oxford in the 2020 League One play-off final.

Following the end of the 2021/22 season, he was offered a new contract and Captained the side for another two years before it was announced that he would leave Wanderers at the end of the 23/24season and made his 400th and final appearance for the blues in a 1-0 victory against Charlton.

Jacobson recently joined Reading after Rob Couhig purchased the club and is now their Co-CEO.

Ryan Tafazolli
Joining during Wycombe’s Championship season, Tafazolli went on to stay after relegation and quickly became a fan favourite, scoring in the 2-0 victory against MK Dons in the home leg on the playoff semi-finals. I

In January of this year, he joined Hong Kong Premier League Club, Lee Man on loan until the end of the 24/25 season. He then left Wanderers for League Two side, Swindon Town.

Anthony Stewart
Stewart is another player that was also in the squad for the 2020 play-off final victory, scoring the first goal in the match.

Following the end of the 21/22 season, Stewart signed with Scottish Premiership side, Aberdeen, on a free transfer, and was appointed as their captain.

In January of 2023 he signed for MK Dons on loan and made his first appearance against Wycombe.

Stewart was released in 2024 and subsequently signed for Ebbsfleet before joining Kettering in September of this year.

Jason McCarthy
Joining Wycombe Wanderers for the fourth time in August 2020, McCarthy signed a three-year deal with the club.

In December 2024, he left the Chairboys by mutual consent and retired shortly after. He is now with Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion, as the assistant to their U21s head coach.

Daryl Horgan
Joining in September 2020 on a two-year deal from Hibernian, scoring in his debut in an EFL Cup first round defeat to Brentford.

In January 2023, he signed for Stevenage on loan until the end of the season, making 14 appearances and finished second, securing their promotion to League One.

In May of the same year, it was announced that he would be leaving Wycombe following the expiration of his contract.

Horgan then signed for Dundalk in the League of Ireland Premier Division, and is currently still with the team. They qualified for the UEFA Europa Conference League and reached the second qualifying round, but he wasn’t in the squad

Josh Scowen
Joining in 2021, Scowen signed a two-year deal, extending by a year in April 2023. A solid starter throughout the years for Wanderers.

However, he picked up a serious injury last season against Leyton Orient, which was somehow only a yellow card, tearing his ACL and is expected to miss a good portion of 25/26 season.

Jordan Obita
Joining in 2021 from Oxford for an undisclosed fee, Obita was with Wanderers for two years before leaving in 2023 after rejecting a new contract.

He then joined Hibernian on a two-year contract and is currently still with the Scottish Premiership side. Recently, he was called up for international duty with Uganda.

This season, Hibernian played in the UEFA Conference League qualifying rounds, with Obita featuring.

Dominic Gape
Joining Wycombe Wanderers permanently after a successful loan spell in 2017, Gape scored the winning goal in a 2-1 victory against Chesterfield, confirming promotion for the Chairboys into League One.

Offered a new contract in May 2019, Gape left Wycombe at the end of the 22/23 season. He then went on to join Sutton, Northampton and Eastleigh.

However, he was released in June when his contract expired, subsequently joining Shrewsbury that same month.

Garath McCleary
An iconic player overall for Wycombe Wanderers, joining on a free transfer from Reading in November 2020.

Scoring his first goal against Preston, McCleary went on to make another 195 appearances, scoring 31 more goals too.

After five years at Wycombe, Gareth left, reuniting with former boss Gareth Ainsworth at League Two side Gillingham.

Sam Vokes
Joining in 2021 from Stoke City for an undisclosed fee, Vokes was another player that could have been called Wycombe through and through.

He scored the goal to make it two in the semi-finals against MK Dons. Ahead of the 2022 play-off final, he signed a further one-year deal, extending by another year in April 2023.

Vokes made his final appearance for Wycombe in the 3-1 loss against Stockport at home but only spent a few minutes on the pitch before breaking his arm after landing awkwardly following an ariel duel.

Following his departure from Wanderers, Vokes went on to join Gillingham, also reuniting with Gareth Ainsworth.

Lewis Wing
A great player on his day, Wing made a substitute appearance for Wycombe in the play-off final, coming on in the 55th minute.

He stayed for another season, becoming Wycombe’s joint top goalscorer for 22/23.

Rejecting a new contract and choosing to leave the club amid interest from Championship clubs such as QPR, Wing went on to join fellow League One side, Reading.

The midfielder has since scored twice at Adams Park on his travels with the Royals.

Brandon Hanlan
Joining in 2021 on a three-year deal, Hanlan scored his first goal for Wanderers in a 6-1 defeat against Manchester City in the Carabao Cup.

His first league goal came against his former club Gillingham. Hanlan came on the 65th minute against Sunderland in the final.

The 2023 Summer transfer was definitely an odd one for the player as he had reportedly agreed personal terms with Wrexham, but no move happened.

In November, he suffered a serious ACL injury after being pulled to the ground which required him to be taken off the pitch on a stretcher.

After 11 months out injured, he played 20 minutes in a behind-closed-doors friendly against QPR. Hanlan went out on loan to Stevenage until the rest of the 23/24 season.

In 2025, it was announced that he would be leaving Wycombe when his contract expired, joining newly-promoted Doncaster Rovers.

Adebayo Akinfenwa
Arguably Wycombe’s most famous ever player, Akinfenwa’s last ever game for Wycombe was the play-off final against Sunderland.

Wycombe’s record goalscorer in the EFL with 54 goals. He signed a new one-year contract with Wanderers and announced that it would be his final season in professional football.

In July 2022, he played in a pre-season friendly for Hashtag United, but didn’t join full-time.

In March 2023, he came out of retirement and joined Isthmian League side Faversham Town. This year, he was named as part of the lineup for Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins.

Chris Forino-Joseph
Joining while Wycombe were in the Championship, Forino had a long spell out injured following relegation.

He was an unused substitute in the play-off final against Sunderland and was offered a new contract at the end of the 23/24 season.

But in June 2024, it was announced that he would be joining League One rivals Bolton.

David Wheeler
Signing in 2019 on a three-year deal, Wheeler spent six years at Wycombe before leaving in February 2025.

He joined Shrewsbury Town on a short-term contract but left at the end of the season after Gareth Ainsworth also left.

Following his retirement, Wheeler called time on his professional football career, and started a new chapter as a Sports Psychologist.

Jack Grimmer
One of the two remaining players from this squad who are still at Wycombe, Grimmer was an unused substitute in the final against Sunderland.

He would become Wycombe’s captain following Joe Jacobson’s departure.

Tyla Dickinson
Only making a total of four appearances in two years, Dickinson spent most of his time with The Chairboys out on loan, before leaving at the end of the 22/23 season.

He is currently still a Free Agent.
