Wanderers faced off against Exeter City last night under the floodlights at Adams Park, with the blues looking to get their first win of the 25/26 campaign season.
Junior Quitirna was benched once again, with Fred Onyedinma starting. Academy player, Cam Stones, was on the bench after his impressive debut at Leyton Orient a week ago. Micah Olabiyi also featured on the bench alongside his academy teammate. Bradley Fink, Ewan Henderson and Garath McCleary were absent, due to injury.
The game kicked off and the visitors were close to taking an early lead through Turns but his volley was saved by Mikki van Saas, with Wycombe taking the ball and running it down towards the other end, Allen’s cross finding Onyedinma, who shot wide.
Wanderers were once again close with Lowry’s shot from outside the box blocked by an Exeter body. Chances were a luxury for Wycombe, as they were once again close with Hagelskjaer running the ball from Wycombe’s half before passing to Allen, his shot was blocked before falling to the Danish defender who had a shot of his own which was caught by the keeper.
It was then Exeter’s turn to attack but their shot was wide of the post.
Lowry once again attempted a shot from outside the box but it was dealt with and went out for a cross.
That was it for the first half, Wanderers having many chances but once again lacking the ability to put the ball in the back of the net.
Early defensive work in the second half allowed Grimmer to play Onyedinma running into the box, but Whitworth collected.
A substitution was made with a little more than an hour played, with Fred Onyedinma coming off for Junior Quitirna, then again ten minutes later, with Abbott and Lowry coming off for Boyd-Munce and Tilley.
Then came the goal. Grimmer unfortunately misplaced a header which made its way into the back of his own net, his head in his hands. Despite protests to the referee that an Exeter player was in an offside position for the goal, it stood and it was 1-0 to the visitors.
Wycombe came close again with Boyd-Munce’s strike on target but was tipped over by the keeper, and that was full time.
Where to even begin with this one? Wycombe dominated the entire game, 63% possession, 19 total shots with eight on target, and to rub salt in the wound, Exeter didn’t register a shot in the entire second half. If this doesn’t highlight Wycombe’s need for a fit goalscorer, nothing else will. So many chances were created last night but none were put in the back of the net.
