Who could replace Wycombe Wanderers’ Richard Kone? – Writers Opinion

Who could replace Wycombe Wanderers’ Richard Kone? – Writers Opinion

Richard Kone has been linked with a number of clubs as he enters the last year of his contract. Swansea City have most recently tabled a bid of 4.5 million for the stiker.

So we asked our team a simple question: Who would you want to replace him? And why them?

Our writers:

Daragh (@WycombeDJ):

You can’t really replace Kone, but I think Wycombe have done a smart job already in recruiting players who, together, already match Kone’s goal tally.

If Coalan Boyd-Munce (5 goals), Dan Casey (3 goals), James Tilley (4 goals), Ewan Henderson (3 goals), Taylor Allen (11 goals), Junior Quiturna (8 goals) and Bradley Fink (1 goal) match their goalscoring records from last season, that’s 35 goals, 17 more goals than Kone scored on his own in league one.

But, for a like for like replacement 9, Notts County’s Alassana Jatta is the ideal replacement. At 26 he fits the recruitment targeted age for new incoming signings, and has a tremendous record of 27 goals in 53 league games for Notts County.

He’s less aerially and physically capable than Kone, winning less of his duels (3.88 per match compared to 7.83), but is similarly capable at dribbling and beating his man.

Importantly, he actually betters Kone in shooting statistics, getting more expected goals per game despite taking less shots per game than Kone. Simply put, if he gets a shot off, it’s usually a pretty good shot.

With one year left on his contract from when he signed from Viborg, Notts will be in a similar position to Wycombe. What better way to invest some of the money from Kone onto his direct replacement.

Adam (@adamgipki):

Wycombe’s New Number 9 for me has to be someone that has a knack about them.

Presence and more importantly a good touch inside the box. My suggestion is both bold and could be contentious to many Wycombe fans given his recent history of playing against us.

It’s not Jordan Rhodes, but it is Wrexham’s Sam Smith. He’s tenacious, full of running and just a constant menace for defences in League One. Not only that, but he can play the part of pantomime villain against  numerous teams supporters but more importantly he can score important goals.

As shown with his transfer to Wrexham from Reading, he contributed 7 goals in the tail end of the season that helped them gain automatic promotion. Many of them being crucial winners in a style of football that wasn’t sympathetic for him in the system.

For me, he’s got the all round attributes to help this team in the absence of a potentially transfered Richard Kone.

Ryan (@FusionRaided):

If Richard Kone was to unfortunately part ways with the Wanderers, my personal opinion is that Wycombe should consider signing Harry Leonard from Blackburn.

Despite limited opportunities, only playing nine times in the Championship last season, he has shown promise with intelligent movement within the attacking third of the pitch, aerial ability- Standing at 6ft tall and is willing to battle defenders.

Regular minutes at Wycombe Wanderers could give him the chance he needs to thrive. However, he is somewhat unproven at the moment so would be a gamble.

Henry (@HenryMorga75292):

For me Will Evans from Mansfield, I believe he is eyed by Preston North End and similar to Kone has one year remaining on his contract.

The Stags striker has great footballing intelligence and always shows up on the biggest of occasions. He is still 29 years old so gives the perfect balance of further development whilst also having a veteran head on him.

14 goals and 2 assists last year, none of which were penalties a proven League One striker who had scored plenty of goals throughout his career.

Richard (@rkyson99):

While we have Dan Udoh and Bradley Fink contracted to the club, a loan could provide a spark to help replace Kone. Tottenhams Dane Scarlett could be a smart signing for the short term.

While he struggled on loan for the first half of last season with Oxford United in the Championship, he still netted 4 times before being recalled.

He’s highly rated and still only 21, and a drop down to League One to a squad looking to challenge at the top end of the table could do the striker a world of good, and the presence of Fink and Udoh would remove the pressure on Scarlett to hit the ground running and carry the attack.
